Grandfather Clocks

Grandfather clocks are large, tall, elongated instruments that are used to measure, indicate and keep time and at the same time decorate a home.  Although a large number of different types of clocks are available, including Grandfather Clocks, Cuckoo Clocks, Alarm Clocks, Mantel Clocks, Musical Clocks, Table Clocks, Wall Clocks and Desk Clocks, Grandfather Clocks are probably the most venerated and cherished.

Grandfather Clocks

Tall-case floor clocks such as Grandfather Clocks are weight-driven pendulum clocks, with the pendulum system contained inside the case.  The tall case is required because the pendulum and weights are long.  Sometimes the pendulum system is completely concealed, but other Grandfather Clocks show off the pendulum and weights by putting them behind glass.  The case of a Grandfather Clock often features elaborately carved designs on the area which surrounds and frames the clock face.

Most Grandfather clocks have a striking mechanism such as a gong, bell or chimes.  The clock sounds the time on each hour (and certain fractions of an hour) by striking this mechanism.  The chime sequence is usually one of two or three standard types and is very distinctive and easily heard.  Some Grandfather Clocks allow the owner to easily choose a different chime melody.

Grandfather Clocks are usually made with one of two types of movement - an eight-day movement or a 30-hour movement. A Grandfather Clock with an eight-day movement typically requires winding only once a week, while a 30-hour clock usually has to be wound every day.  Because of the inconvenience of winding every day, modern Grandfather Clocks use eight-day movements.  But because of their longevity and the care they are given, plenty of older 30-hour Grandfather Clocks still exist.

Several different sizes and many different styles of Grandfather Clocks are available.  They are usually 6 to 8 feet tall, and no more than 2 or 3 feet wide.  But slightly shorter, more compact varieties include Grandmother Clocks (usually 5 to 6 feet tall) and Granddaughter Clocks (shorter than 5 feet tall).  Styling can be traditional or contemporary.

Wood is almost exclusively used for Grandfather Clock cases, but many different types of woods and finishes are available, so that Grandfather Clocks are available to fit in with any decor.  Traditional-style Grandfather Clocks are highly decorated with ornate carvings, and they definitely add stately, old-fashioned grace to a room.  Contemporary styles that are not so ornately decorated will lend simple, elegant distinction to the room where they are placed.

Grandfather Clocks are treasured possessions, heirlooms that are passed from parents to their children.  Yes, they keep time accurately, but any clock will do that.  More than any other type of clock, Grandfather Clocks beautify any home.

Make time for yourself.  Make time for your home.  Keep time with a beautiful, stately Grandfather Clock.
