Handmade Collectibles
Handmade collectibles are, in essence, "do it yourself" collectibles that someone has made by hand. By definition, they are not made in a factory and they are not mass-produced. There are thousands of different types of handmade collectibles, and probably hundreds of different ways of making them.

They can be made by drawing, painting, woodworking, sewing, and knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, needlepoint, and more. They can be pieces of artwork, photography, pottery, ceramics, stained glass, furniture, wall plaques, paperweights, jewelry, candles, pillows, rugs, bookplates, scrapbooks, and quilts. The potential list of different types of handmade collectibles is almost endless.
One of the reasons that handmade collectibles are so appealing is that they are almost always made by a "regular person," and not a famous artist, photographer, or artisan of note. They are not made in any company factory. Instead, they are most often made in a person's home or in a small workshop. The artisan responsible for making a handmade collectible could be located anywhere in the world, but some parts of the world are more famous for their "cottage crafters" than other areas. Scotland, Ireland, the Appalachian Mountains region of the United States, and certain other regions of the world such as New Zealand, are particularly well known for the number and quality of handmade collectibles that are made there.
Another reason for the popularity of handmade collectibles is their strong tie to folk art and to country life.
They can also be very nostalgic, reminding you of items that your Grandmother used to make by hand.
Handmade collectibles can be assembled into a collection, or they can add zest to your wardrobe or your home decor. They can be serious in nature, or they can be very whimsical. They can be a visible, tangible symbol of an ethnic culture - such as Navajo Indian blankets or pottery - or a painstakingly assembled and pasted scrapbook of family memorabilia.
Because of their popularity, some handmade collectibles are quite valuable, but the majority are relatively inexpensive. They are attractive and collectible because of their unique nature, the craftsmanship they exhibit, and the wonderful, personal appeal that they have. They are not mass-produced by the thousands or millions, instead being individually and carefully made or put together by someone who could be just like your neighbour or your Aunt Betsy. They can be found at estate sales, auctions, antique shops, and craft exhibits and shows, both "in person" and on the internet.
Finding "just the right piece" might take a while, but it's out there somewhere, and it's
definitely worth looking for.
