Rare Collectibles

Rare collectibles are, by their very nature, very scarce and hard to find.  They can be antique items that are desirable because of their age, rarity, craftsmanship or other unique features that represent the past.  Sometimes rare collectibles are so old that they are also antiquities - archaeological artefacts of an ancient civilization, such as ancient Minoan or ancient Chinese society.  Alternatively, some rare collectibles are quite modern in origin, sometimes being only 5 or 10 years old.

Rare Collectibles

The common denominator of all rare collectibles is their rarity.  Frequently, because of their scarcity and their appeal, they are also valuable.  But whether they are valuable or inexpensive, they are always highly valued parts of a collection.

The definition of "rarity" changes with the type of object, and accordingly, the definition of "rare collectibles" is a bit imprecise.  In some cases an object is a rare collectible because only one or two examples of that object are known to exist in the entire world.  In other cases, hundreds or even more of the particular object may have survived to the present, but because they are hard to locate or are fragile and easily damaged (such as a piece of rare pottery, an early postage stamp or a piece of paper ephemera), high quality examples are considered to be scarce.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different types of rare collectibles.  Some examples include certain coins and stamps, books and manuscripts, pottery, weapons, armament and other militaria, antique tools, artwork (particularly original oil and watercolor paintings), antique furniture, paper ephemera and more.  "Paper ephemera" consists of written or printed material that has survived to the present despite the fact that the pieces were originally produced as disposable items, intended to be quickly discarded or destroyed.  Examples of ephemera that can be rare collectibles include certain postcards, posters, trade cards, leaflets, exposition programs and advertising flyers.  Certain autographs, souvenirs and collectible memorabilia are also rare collectibles.

Rare collectibles can be from anywhere in the world.  Rare Oriental collectibles range from small items such as Chinese Dynastic pottery or temple objects, to large objects such as Japanese paintings or articles of traditional clothing from the Japanese feudal period.  European rare collectibles are equally varied, and range from certain ancient Greek or Roman coins to the beautifully illuminated (illustrated) Bibles and other religious books that were painstakingly hand-decorated by medieval monks.  Collectible, rare objects from the Americas include certain pieces of Native American (Indian) pottery, blankets or artwork, historical documents such as those from Colonial or Revolutionary times, and ancient Inca, Aztec or Maya amulets, pottery and carvings.

Many people seek out rare collectibles because of their inherent value.  But the primary motivation for others is the "thrill of the hunt" - that certain satisfaction when a very hard to find piece is tracked down and finally located somewhere in the world.  Rare collectibles can be found at "in person" and online estate sales, auctions, antique shops and antiquities dealers.  As witnessed by the popular television show "Antiques Road show," they can even be found at yard sales and flea markets.  Whichever way you choose to shop for rare collectibles, you will experience the thrill of the hunt.
