Many items are highly sought after by collectors simply because
they relate to the National Basketball Association (NBA), a specific
professional basketball team, a favourite college, university or high
school basketball team, a country's Olympic basketball team, or a specific basketball player, coach or other staff member.
One of the fundamental characteristics of mankind is the urge to surround ourselves with objects that, for various reasons, appeal to us.
The Middle Ages, or the medieval period, began in the 5th century -
around the time of the decline and fall of the Western Roman Empire.
Many objects are highly prized for their connection with a particular war
or with one or more specific battles that occurred during a war.
Thousands of different subjects can be the topic for a memorabilia collection.
Among them - just to name a very few - are films, television shows, actors or actresses, book authors, politicians, athletic events and athletes, explorers, wars or specific battles, amusement parks, world's
fairs and international expositions, and fraternal orders such as Freemasonry or the Benevolent
and
Protective Order of Elks (BPOE).
The scope of a memorabilia collection can be very broad, such as "anything" relating to film-making in general or to a particular movie, or it can be limited to a very specific, narrow field such as paper items (sometimes called "paper ephemera") that were printed in connection with the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
A broad, general memorabilia collection relating to a specific movie might include, for example,
the following types of items: movie props, movie posters, lobby cards, photographs of the cast, autographs of cast members, press releases announcing the commencement of filming or the film's opening to the public, scripts, director's notes, actual film reels, wardrobes / costumes, video files that include movie trailers, awards won by the film or by a cast member, and film cells (film strip pieces).
An example of a much more specific, "honed-in" collection of memorabilia might be one that is limited to paper ephemera from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Such a collection could include postcards of fair sights and scenes that were printed in connection with the exposition, maps showing the exhibit grounds and the exhibition buildings, daily programs of events, real photograph booklets, advertising leaflets and flyers featuring specific pieces of equipment that were exhibited at the fair, Sunday newspaper inserts advertising the fair, pre-opening artists' drawings of the fairgrounds, United States postage stamps commemorating the fair, and commemorative decks of cards. As with movie memorabilia, some of these items are worth hundreds of dollars and sometimes even more, but others might cost less than $10 to buy.
Many pieces of memorabilia can be very hard to find and are very expensive, but others are much
more common and much less expensive. An important piece of memorabilia may be as small as an autographed photograph of a celebrity, or as large as an automobile used in a film.
Individual pieces of memorabilia may serve as simple souvenirs or keepsakes of a person's experiences
at an event, or memorabilia may be collected over time and assembled to form a much more extensive, comprehensive historical archive. The choice is always up to the individual collector.
But no matter how extensive or limited, finding a new piece of memorabilia that begins a new collection,
or fits into an existing collection, is an exciting experience.
