War Memorabilia

Many objects are highly prized for their connection with a particular war War Memorabilia
or with one or more specific battles that occurred during a war.

These types of war artefacts are commonly referred to as war memorabilia.
"Militaria" is sometimes used as a synonym for war memorabilia.
Either term includes instruments of war (weapons) such as pistols,
rifles, carbines, swords and scabbards, daggers and knives, bayonets,
artillery shells, mortar shells, ammunition clips, ammunition pouches,
bandoliers, individual cartridges, bullets or bullet moulds,
grenades and the like.

Other types of war memorabilia / militaria are complete military or naval uniforms, individual uniform components such as shirts, caps, helmets, pants, jackets, overcoats, belts, belt buckles, flak jackets and the like, military insignia and other indicators of rank, regimental or battalion flags, pennants and banners, propaganda leaflets that were distributed to villagers and propaganda posters, photographs of uniformed servicemen, service medals, stamps and currency of an occupied or invaded country brought home by soldiers or sailors, zippo lighters that were distributed to soldiers and sailors, autographs of generals and admirals on various treaties, instruments of surrender and other documents, uniform patches and other articles of military heraldry, canteens, soldiers' or sailors' letters to home, and "home-front" propaganda and morale-boosting literature distributed to the population of a country or region.

War memorabilia can relate to any specific war or to any specific battle or group of battles.  The choice is always up to the individual collector.  War memorabilia from the American Revolutionary War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the invasion of Normandy (D-Day) and the Battle of the Bulge (both of which occurred during World War 2) are some of the more popular choices.  A collection of war memorabilia can be very broad and general, such as "anything" relating to the Allies or the Axis forces during World War 2, or it can be limited to a very specific, narrow field, such as Nazi German SS or Luftwaffe daggers used in combat only on the Eastern Front.

Many pieces of war memorabilia can be very hard to find and are very expensive, but others are much more common and much less expensive.  An important piece of war memorabilia may be as small as a postcard that features a village that was bombed to rubble, or as large as a cannon used in combat.

Individual pieces of war memorabilia may serve as simple souvenirs, keepsakes or mementos of a person's experiences during a war, or they may be collected over time and assembled into a much more extensive, comprehensive record.  Again, the choice is always up to the individual collector.  But no matter how extensive or limited, any collection of war memorabilia is of historical interest and is a fascinating pursuit.
