Wedding Rings

Rings can have many different meanings.  They can be a token of simple affection, like friendship rings.
They can signify membership in a fraternal organization, such as Masonic rings.

Or they can reflect the wearer's graduation from a particular school or university, such as a class ring.
Military and service rings show a person's pride in being a member of the armed forces, while family signet rings or family seal rings reflect family heritage.  Mother's or grandmother's rings are frequently set with colored crystals or gemstones that represent the birth months of their children or grandchildren.

Still other types of rings have no meaning at all, being given or worn simply because of their beauty.
But the most important ring there is, and the most important meaning that a ring can have, is the universal symbol of eternal, lasting love - the wedding ring.

Precious metals such as gold, sterling silver and platinum are usually used to make wedding rings.
Because of their constant, close contact with skin, wedding rings are not usually made of less expensive
metals such as gold plate, silver plate or vermeil.  A wedding ring may be a simple, unadorned band of
white or yellow gold, or it may be set or inlaid with precious or semi-precious gemstones such as diamonds, emeralds, sapphires, rubies or topaz.  Other wedding rings use less expensive synthetic or simulated gemstones such as cubic zirconia - which look much like diamonds - or cut crystal, either colored or clear.
But when gemstones are used, diamonds are by far the most popular.

A wedding ring on a woman's finger is instantly recognizable and tells the world that she is married.  But wedding rings are for men, too.  A matched pair, of identical design, is traditional when the man and the woman both have wedding rings.

Wedding rings may be personalized by engraving the inside of the band with the names or initials of the wedded couple.  The date of the couple's wedding ceremony, or some other date or event that is significant
to the couple is also sometimes engraved on their wedding rings.

Most wedding rings, being fine jewelry made of precious metals, retain their value over time.
They are family heirlooms, often passed from mother to daughter or father to son.

Most American and European gold wedding rings are made of a gold alloy - a mixture of gold and some other metal.  American gold wedding rings are at least 10 Karat (a little more than 40% gold in the alloy) and usually no more than 18K (75% pure gold).  The Western world generally considers any higher percentage of gold to be too soft for wedding rings.  Higher-purity gold is, however, often used in wedding rings that are made in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.  The platinum that is used for wedding rings is also an alloy, ranging from between 90% pure platinum to 95% pure platinum.  When silver is used, it is usually sterling silver, which is 92.5% pure.

Different finishes can be given to the precious metal used in wedding rings.  A high-polish finish is the most popular.  A satin or matte finish is sometimes used to emphasize gemstones because it makes their appearance much more striking.  A simulated "brush-stroke" appearance results from the use of a brushed finish, while hammered finishes have a wavy or bumpy texture which can be a bit more masculine.

Rings have many meanings, but a wedding ring is the most meaningful of all.  Whether classic or creative in design, every type of wedding ring is a beautiful, enduring reflection of your commitment and devotion.
